Brown-Forman Director of Packaging in Louisville, Kentucky
Responsible for integrating the creative and technical requirements for all Brown-Forman global package development to ensure a successful package that meets quality, production, marketing, and consumer needs. Provides technical guidance on all new packages or package redesigns. Leads a group of Package Engineers and Managers, providing oversight, career development and technical training. Recognized internally and externally as primary expert on packaging and package technology.
Works closely with Global Production Strategic Sourcing group to procure Brown-Forman packaging materials. Provides technical leadership on supply contracts for materials purchased for all of Brown-Forman operations. Helps identify and evaluate suppliers for these items with the goal of leveraging Brown-Forman buying power across brands and sites to ensure the quality and efficiency.
Basic Function: Technical: Provide technical expertise throughout the package design, development, and implementation process to ensure that creative aspects of design are successfully translated into functional high-quality packages that can be efficiently run in Brown-Forman’s operations. Evaluate package development process and recommend improvements to ensure high quality packages, reduce development cycle time, minimize implementation problems and increase creative package implementation. Provides technical expertise to Strategic Sourcing group on supply contracts for materials purchased for all of Brown-Forman operations.
Leadership/Relationship Building: Ensure alignment of packaging initiatives with key stakeholders that support the overarching goals of Brown-Forman and Global Production. Provides leadership and strategic direction to managers, supervisors and engineers in Packaging. Understand and communicate business performance measures and clarify priorities for the team. Build a Packaging culture that encourages learning and continuous improvement; which includes leadership coaching as well as understanding of the team’s individual development goals and motivations.
Provide technical evaluation and guidance throughout the package design, development and implementation process to ensure successful integration of the technical and creative elements. 25%
Liaison with the packaging design team to ensure collaboration and alignment of activities for successful execution of new initiatives. 25%
Provide technical package engineering expertise and mentoring to package engineers in Beverage Packaging Group. Transfer package engineering knowledge / expertise to sustain necessary levels in the department. 20%
Conduct pre-implementation trouble shooting evaluations and post-implementation “lessons learned” evaluations. Recommend process changes for continuous improvement. 10%
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changing package technology and provide recommendations on how such technology can be applied in BFBW. 5%
Serve as primary packaging consultant for agency brands. Provide, as requested, expertise for package improvement and/or cost savings. 5%
Identify suppliers for packaging materials and negotiate contracts leveraging BFs buying power across sites. 5%
Maintain relationships with, and knowledge of, packaging suppliers and supplier capabilities. Be the primary point person to resolve quality or capacity issues with suppliers. 5%
Required Experience & Education:
Education: College/University (Bachelors or Equivalent); Engineering
Experience: • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and a minimum of 8-10 years package industry experience.
• Broad knowledge of all packaging disciplines, including glass, corrugated, label, can and shrink-band production.
• Broad knowledge of U.S. and global suppliers for package materials.
• General knowledge of U.S. and global design agencies.
