Brown-Forman Environmental Performance Senior Specialist in Louisville, Kentucky

Ensures a compliant workplace inclusive of all employees and fosters a positive environmental compliance and sustainability culture through training, coaching, and high levels of employee engagement. Integrates environmental compliance into the supported production organizations by mindful collaboration with Safety, Quality, Production, Finance and Risk Management. Provides proactive leadership of all Environmental Compliance and Sustainability programs at supported production facilities. Ensures 100% compliance of plant operations with regulatory requirements relating to all environmental media, including Air, SARA, Water, Waste, and Wastewater.

Manages all environmental compliance and sustainability activities at various Brown-Forman production facilities. Responsible for tactical environmental compliance activities at facilities, including: auditing, monitoring, reporting, recordkeeping, and training. Develop and execute strategies to maintain compliance for all environmental media (Air, SARA, Water, Waste, and Wastewater) and serve as the subject matter expert for facility environmental sustainability activities and continuous improvement teams and pillars. Develop training materials; conduct on-site training sessions on all pertinent environmental compliance obligations and policies. Maintain GHG inventory and Environmental KPI for operations and facilities, and develops goals and strategies for improvement. Implement and revise all plans and programs relative to operations for environmental programs and permits. Ensure all equipment and operations are appropriately permitted and functioning within applicable limits. Review and update all permits, plans, and processes relative to environmental performance. Develop and execute programs to minimize negative environmental impact of operations; seize opportunities for positive impacts. Maintain working relationships with various NGOs and local, State, and Federal regulatory agencies concerning relevant environmental regulations and environmental sustainability impacts.

Job Responsibilities:

Manages all environmental compliance and sustainability activities at various production facilities. Responsible for tactical environmental compliance activities at facilities, including auditing, monitoring, reporting, record keeping, and training. Assist site in maintaining GHG inventory and environmental KPI record keeping (40%).

Develop and execute strategies to maintain compliance for all environmental media (Air, SARA, Water, Waste, and Wastewater), including operationalizing environmental programs and daily compliance requirements with production teams, and serve as the subject matter expert for facility environmental sustainability and continuous improvement activities. (30%).

Review and update all permits, plans, and processes relative to environmental performance (15%).

Prepare regular environmental performance reports for each operation. Maintain working relationships with various NGOs and local, State, and Federal regulatory agencies concerning relevant EHS regulations (15%).

Required Experience & Education:

BA/BS in environmental sciences or engineering, or civil, chemical, or mechanical engineering with an emphasis on environmental technology plus 3-5 years experience in environmental consulting, environmental management, or a related field.

Demonstrated ability to understand and assimilate diverse concerns and technical data while considering the complete compliance and liability picture.

Ability to independently organize work projects; Collect, analyze data and present results in a concise format.

Demonstrated/proven knowledge of federal, state, provincial, and local environmental regulations, policies, ordinances, and rules. Understand environmental issues, domestic and global.

Demonstrated leadership qualities: management, negotiation, and initiative.

Strong interpersonal skills with ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with regulatory agency and personnel at all levels of management, internal/external, with demonstrated leadership ability.

Ability and experience operating a PC, with specific experience and proficiency with related business and regulatory software. Proficiency and knowledge of Windows applications. Ability to quickly learn and utilize new software. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Drive, and e-mail.

Demonstrated written communication skills, ability to prepare final draft correspondence and reports, excellent grammar, spelling and punctuation skills. Produce finished material from basic instructions.

Ability to organize, prioritize and complete multiple tasks with accuracy and attention to detail under limited supervision and within established time frame.

Ability to multi-task projects that cross environmental disciplines and Global Production operations.

Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

Ability to travel to all Global Production facilities and/or other locations; work a flexible schedule and extended hours as necessary. Position is based in Louisville.

Excellent organization skills, maintain accurate and detailed files; self-starter with a high level of initiative to make independent judgments.

Ability to execute responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner, despite frequent interruptions and changing deadlines.

Grasp tasks and assignments at the time of initial request, take responsibility for developing the method and process for completing tasks and keep Facility and EHS leadership informed.

Exercise good judgment, discretion and maturity in responding to handling all job responsibilities.

Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and to provide written reports & analysis based on that research.

Preferred Experience & Education:

  • Experience: Experience with Brown-Forman structure and Global Production business implications.

  • Experience with Environmental Management Systems

  • Experience with GHG inventory preparation and management

  • Certifications a plus (CHMM, PE, EIT, HAZWOPPER)

  • Knowledge of production processes. Exp. with industrial/manufacturing facilities.

  • Legal background/familiarity

  • Bi- or multi-lingual

  • Letters of reference strongly encouraged
