Brown-Forman Packaging Engineer II - Lab Testing in Louisville, Kentucky
Meaningful Work From Day One Responsible for implementing and maintaining quality and performance testing methods to ensure all BF packaging materials meet or exceed BF specifications. Responsible for the development, specification and approval of package materials used by Brown-Forman bottling sites and external manufacturing bottling sites. Serves as Project Manager and/or Packaging Representative on new package and package redesign projects. Responsible for identifying and using principles of sustainability in developing packages.
What You Can Expect
Oversee Packaging Laboratory operation, resources, and improvements. Recommend and requisition necessary equipment. Establish and execute testing procedures and methods for sample submittal, testing and results distribution.
Manage the development of new packaging component tests in coordination with Packaging Engineers for materials to meet customer requirements.
Ensures that all packaging testing is completed correctly and in a timely manner. Leads a daily lab prioritization meeting to review all lab projects with the packaging group to ensure efficient communication and testing.
Maintains lab cleanliness and organization through a 5S program.
Evaluates packaging material testing needs, equipment and other resources and develops recommendations for continuous improvement of testing capabilities to support global business. Serves as technical consultant to Design, Marketing, Supply Chain, Bottling personnel and Packaging Engineers for packaging issues. Responsible for problem solving processes and works with bottling facilities to recommend and implement solutions to package quality issues as needed.
Serves as Packaging Development lead for a minimum of one BF production site. Develops the proper structures to meet packaging requirements for new and existing products. Works with suppliers to ensure availability of materials, develops prototypes for approval, and prepares all necessary specifications. Serves as Packaging Development lead for additional production sites or projects as needed by the Packaging group.
Provides consultation to package design, marketing, and production personnel on technical packaging issues. Responsible for problem solving processes; works with production facilities and suppliers to recommend and implement solutions to packaging problems.
Develop cost containment / savings / quality improvement ideas through research of improved sources of supply, technology, and materials. Initiates package testing, proves the benefits of cost savings alternatives, and contributes to overall cost containment / savings / quality improvement goals.
Develop sustainable material options that meet BF specifications and execute BF Packaging Sustainability goals.
Attends initial production runs to confirm proper adherence to specifications and maintenance of high-quality package standards as needed.
Maintains thorough and up-to-date knowledge of packaging technology and capabilities through packaging publications, packaging trade shows, supplier meetings, and supplier audits. Develops and presents materials testing training for engineers.
Issues final approval or disapproval for each material based on technical analysis and ensures compliance to corporate standards.
Executes testing in support of the development and commercialization processes of licensed and value-added components within the BF Gift Program to ensure compliance with BF specifications. Coordinates additional input from QA and the DIR of Packaging where needed.
Executes packaging component data management to ensure accurate, organized, and timely access to data on all global BF packaging material components.
Works with the Director of Packaging to provide technical expertise and oversight in materials vendor selection, vendor management, contract negotiation and technical issue resolution as needed.
We Are Looking For People Who
Have a Bachelor's Degree in Packaging from a recognized School of Packaging and minimum of 2 years of packaging materials experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Packaging or closely related engineering discipline and minimum of 3 years of packaging materials experience.
Expert knowledge of package materials, package equipment and testing procedures and experience in communication of technical disciplines across technical and non-technical audiences.
Expert troubleshooting and technical vendor resolution, ability to lead technical vendor management in partnership with Global Strategic Sourcing and Plant Purchasing functions. Demonstrated ability to identify and lead global packaging quality improvement initiatives in partnership with plant operations, Quality Assurance and strategic vendors.
Recognized as a leader of continuous improvement efforts on cross functional teams across the corporation. Knowledge of American Standard Testing Methods, and the Standards Plastics Institute testing methods.
What You Can Add To The Team
Education: Master’s Degree, MBA or Equivalent
Experience: Package Engineering degree or advanced engineering degree, and a minimum of 2 years practical experience working in a field related to alcoholic beverages.
MBA or other advanced degree.
In-depth technical knowledge of packaging materials utilized in the alcoholic beverages industry, knowledge of alcoholic beverage bottling and materials handling equipment as it relates to filling and transporting packaged products.
Knowledge and experience with lab testing methods, analysis and lab management.
Knowledge of Glass Packaging Institute
Demonstrated ability to serve as project team member or leader and to interact with all levels and functions within and outside the company.
Demonstrated ability to work with production personnel at multiple sites in developing new packaging material approaches for new packages, or in formulating and implementing approaches for reducing packaging costs.
Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with different personalities in various fields and backgrounds.
Recognized as a leader of continuous improvement efforts on cross functional teams across the corporation.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
