Brown-Forman Packaging Engineer III in Louisville, Kentucky

Meaningful Work From Day One Responsible for the development, specification and approval of package materials used by Brown-Forman bottling sites and external manufacturing bottling sites. Serves as Project Manager and/or Packaging Representative on new package and package redesign projects. Responsible for identifying and using principles of sustainability in developing packages.

Leads and manages the development, specification, and approval of packaging materials, including supplier selection and qualification for glass and plastic containers, closures, labels, shrink bands and corrugated cases. Develops packaging material lab and line test plans for new product launches or package redesigns. Serves as Project Manager and/or Packaging Representative and provides leadership on new package / package redesign projects. Acts as liaison between Marketing and production facilities to ensure smooth and timely implementation of new packages.

What You Can Expect

Provides leadership to new package / package redesign teams in role as Project Manager or Packaging Representative as assigned. Serves as liaison between the team and Beverage Packaging Group and between Marketing and production facilities. Provides cost estimates, timelines, and risk assessments to the project team. Obtains input from various functional areas (Marketing, Design, Production) to develop accurate and functional specifications for bottles, ship cases, closures, and other package materials. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of technologies, test procedures, and suppliers to ensure the best balance of creative excellence and functional capabilities of BF packages.

Serves as primary contact with supplier during new package development. Serves as primary packaging point person on co-packing and joint venture packaging projects. Provides leadership to combine B-F and partner package development processes to produce successful new package implementation that satisfies the requirements of all parties. Provides suppliers with material requirements and attends initial productions runs. Provides consultation to package design, marketing, and production personnel on technical packaging issues. Responsible for problem solving processes; works with production facilities and suppliers to recommend and implement solutions to packaging problems.

Develop cost containment / savings / quality improvement ideas through research of improved sources of supply, technology, and materials. Initiates package testing, proves the benefits of cost savings alternatives, and contributes to overall cost containment, savings, quality improvement and sustainability goals.

Maintains thorough and up-to-date knowledge of packaging technology and capabilities through packaging publications, packaging trade shows, supplier meetings, and supplier audits. Subject matter expert in a major packaging material that Brown-Forman uses (Glass/PET/Aluminum). Maintains up to date knowledge of material innovation and all associated training available for the packaging Department.

As required, assists in the research of environmental compliance requirements and the resolution of environmental compliance issues involving packaging components.

Required Experience & Education:

Have a Bachelor's Degree in Packaging from a recognized School of Packaging and minimum of 4 years of packaging materials experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Packaging or closely related engineering discipline and minimum of 6 years of packaging materials experience.
