Brown-Forman Spencer Mill Supervisor in Spencer, Indiana
Supervise production operations at the Spencer Mill for Brown-Forman Cooperage, including the activities of hourly employees, both production operators and maintenance technicians. Has indirect responsibility for an annual operating budget in excess of $7 million, a log inventory throughput of over 6 million log feet annually valued in excess of $5 million and the annual production of 100,000+ barrel sets per year valued at approximately $11 million.
Supervise the activities associated with barrel stave and heading production including log receipt, processing into staves and heading, storage, shipment and byproduct management. Responsible for insuring adherence to all applicable quality parameters and requirements; environmental and regulatory requirements; plant safety and accident prevention; equipment maintenance and operation; employee training and development and other activities associated with mill production operations. Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures and plant rules and procedures. Assists in developing plant budgets and manages operations within budget guidelines. Oversee plant operations during the absence of the Mill Manager.
40% Supervise plant production operations including: the receipt and unloading of logs; log processing and machining into rough staves and heading; yard operations and storage; dust and chip storage and handling; and, stave and heading loading and shipping. Ensure operation conforms to applicable BF policies; environmental and regulatory compliance requirements; regulatory requirements and established quality and safety parameters.
30% Oversee and supervise the maintenance of plant equipment, facilities and vehicles (forklifts, log booms, etc.). Supervise sundry maintenance and repairs as needed, coordinates major repairs and equipment installations with BFC Engineering or contractors and determines, designs and implements modifications and improvements for improved plant productivity.
10% Orders, inventories, utilizes and distributes plant operating supplies; personal protective equipment; maintenance repair and replacement parts; vehicle maintenance and repair parts; and routine administration supplies (forms, time cards, etc.) as needed. Ensures stock rooms and storage locations are secured and properly inventoried.
10% Determines hourly staffing needs based on scheduled work activity and strategic plans. Assists in hiring new employees; trains, evaluates and provides for employee development; monitors employee performance; ensures compliance with all policies, procedures and work rules and applies corrective actions as needed.
10% Provides input into plant safety goals, policies and programs; implements and monitors safety programs; insures accurate safety data collection and reporting to meet company and regulatory requirements and supervises to reduce plant injuries and accidents.
Required Experience & Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in business or related field plus 2-5 years experience supervising a stand-alone manufacturing operation or a department or segment in a fast-paced production environment with multiple hourly reports or equivalent education and experience combined.
• Mechanical aptitude and basic knowledge of maintenance, hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic system maintenance and repair in a production environment.
• Working knowledge of computer software programs including spreadsheet and word processing software.
• Proven ability to supervise multiple priorities, operations, processes and managing to budgets.
• Competencies: Communication, operational decision making, problem solving, judgment, project management, coaching/people management, and planning/priority setting.
Preferred Experience & Education:
Experience: • Previous experience supervising a cooperage, stave mill or sawmill operation and significant knowledge of stave manufacturing procedures and wood science.#SM#TSM
